Antrim and Armagh enjoy the Legends Tournament
Antrim and Armagh were proudly represented in the recent Legend’s Tournament, hosted by St Jude’s in Dublin. The Antrim girls were drawn against still opposition in the form of Tipperary and Wexford.
The games were played at a fierce pace with Antrim holding Tipperary to a one goal advantage at half time. Sinead Lagan’s point blank save at the start of the second half was the drive to spur the girls on, and with sharp shooter Carla Doherty in form and Grainne Connolly and Denise Darragh adding to the scoreline the girls ran out winners with a four point margin.
The second game saw a lively Wexford Team with many past county stars take to the field. The Antrim ladies were getting into their stride and superb performances by Eimear Grieve, Maureen Barry and new mum Ciara McGinley meant that the Wexford forwards were thwarted with almost every attack. A goal scored by the foot of a stickless Úna Kelly and another superbly taken by Eilish McCormick added to Wexford’s woes. Louise Brolly’s fitness and support play was phenomenal throughout.
Having won their section the girls were due to progress to the semi-final stage alongside Kilkenny and Galway, however Antrim were drawn to play another game in the quarter finals against Tipperary. This was again an evenly matched contest with Antrim leading by a goal at the break. Tipperary spurred on by the presence of Deirdre Hughes came out on top by a four point margin.
The Tipperary girls went on to beat Kilkenny in the semi-finals. However it was Cork who claimed the title for the Legends 2 tournament.
Antrim would like to offer a big thank you to O Neill’s Sportswear for the sponsorship of the shirts. It was a fantastic day for all involved, with both teams reacquainting themselves with old team mates, county and college players. The standard of camogie was excellent and we look forward to the challenge of Legends 3. Bring them on!!
