Loreto win all Cavan affair

Loreto Cavan 4-4 St Claire’s Ballyjamesduff 0-2

After finishing 1-3 each last Sunday in this all-Cavan Senior Shield final, a low-scoring replay was anticipated with both defences in the ascendancy. That was how yesterday’s game panned out the first half with St Claire’s 0-2 to 0-1 ahead at the break.

However Loreto got the breaks in the second half. Firstly Emer Sexton took a pass from Shannon Leddy in the 35th minute and found the net and Laura McKiernan quickly added a second goal as Loreto broke clear.

Ballyjamesduff then had a 10 minute spell of dominance but, as in the first half, they got little change in front of goal and on a break at the other end Laura Leddy put the game beyond them with a third Loreto goal.

A fourth followed after a 45 from Katie Smith dropped right on the goal-line and was scrambled over. Katie and then Laura McKiernan (2) finished the scoring for Loreto, who now go through to the All-Ireland series in February.
