U14’s ready for Speed Camogie League

A number of clubs are scheduled to take part in the first of its kind 9-a-side U14 Speed Camogie league in Ballycastle starting on the 20 ^th January 2012 for 4 weeks. This is a new concept for Camogie that has been brought forward to trial by Chris McAuley from Ballycastle.

Chris has worked closely with Camogie in the past 5 years at club and county level and sees the need to make players react, move and think faster with pressure situations making the correct move. Substitutions can be made at any time; Games will be 8 minutes in total with the ball live as much as possible, goals only will count as scores.

One of the new rules being introduced to this Speed league includes the team who scores in the game having advantage of retaining the ball and play starting with the goalkeeper starting the attack again, the reason for this is it makes defenders and attackers react quickly to cut space down and make players work harder to regain the ball.

Ballycastle, Loughgiel, Dunloy, Portglenone, Bridini Oga, Swatragh, Eoghan Rua & Cushendall have signed up to this for the first time and after meeting on Thursday the 20 ^th December they can’t wait to get started.

Teams have a panel size of 13 – 15 players each.  Antrim Camogie Board & Moyle District Council have backed this program for the 4 weeks and the clubs involved fully understand this is not a competition that is goal bound on winning but to promote Camogie at under 14 years of age and produce players to think and react a lot faster than what is happening. In the future it would be great to have this happening throughout Ulster.

Due to adverse weather conditions the first week will be held indoor at Dunloy Academy starting Sunday the 20 ^th at 9.50am, come along and take a look at what is going on.
