Antrim future bright insists Intermediate captain McNaughton

Two late goals helped secure the NWP Recycling Ulster Intermediate Championship for Antrim on Saturday when they faced Tyrone. Tyrone led for most of the second half before Antrim scored 2-02 in the final 10 minutes to win 2-10 to 3-01 at Owenbeg. The Antrim team was a young side made up mostly of minors with this being the first time the Saffrons entered a second team in the Ulster Intermediate Championship.

Loughgiel Shamrocks half back Lucia McNaughton led the young team in very difficult conditions to overcome a more experienced Tyrone side. Lucia who was also named Player of the Match believes the conditions did make the game a real fight “The conditions were very tough, the ball didn’t travel that far and it never really bounced but we were happy enough with our display. We battled back well at the end after conceding the lead to Tyrone so it was very encouraging”.

Lucia believes the spirit and determination showed how well this particular group has come together through development squads in the county. “This group has been together since about U12 and we are so happy and this was our first real win as a team. Antrim camogie will continue to be strong. This is a strong group of players and we need to continue to get support and develop and hopefully we will see many of this group playing senior County in years to come.  There are great girls on this team and I have no doubt many of these girls will go onto big things”.
