Three years after their first title, Our Lady’s Newry are celebrating their second success in the Rosina McManus Shield after a 2-2 to 1-3 victory over St Mary’s Clady in very challenging weather conditions at Killyman on Saturday.
A cross-field breeze kept scoring at a minimum and the 2-2 that the winners collected in the opening half were enough to see them over the line.
It means that Ciara Tinnelly follows her sister Karen as a winning captain, 7 years after the current Down senior led Our Lady’s to the Senior Medallion title.
Ciara supplied the pass that saw Eimear Rushe open the scoring with a 10 th minute goal.
Although Amy Cassidy responded for St Mary’s Clady, Liatroim Fontenoys’ forward Niamh McCrickard fired in a second goal for Our Lady’s who led by 2-2 to 1-1 at the turnover.
Amy Cassidy, who accounted for the entire St Mary’s total, managed to pull 2 more points back for the Derry school, but they could not close the gap further with Our Lady’s half-back line of Noleen McAlinden, Shannon McPartland and Claire McGilligan shutting out all avenues to their goal.
St Mary’s defence had an excellent second half, holding their opponents scoreless, but there simply was not enough scoring support for Amy Cassidy in the forward line.
