Junior Medallion Shield final

St Louis Kilkeel 3-2 St Paul’s Kilrea 2-4

St Louis Kilkeel collected their first ever Junior Shield title with a narrow 3-2 to 2-4 victory that overturned an earlier league win that St Paul’s Kilrea had enjoyed over them.

For Kilrea, it is their third final defeat in succession, but they simply left it too late to reel the Down side in, and found it very difficult to deal with the likes of Sinead O’Rourke, Ciara Keenan and Aoife Fearon.

In very difficult weather conditions, it soon became apparent that scores were going to be at a premium and a goal from Sorcha McCartan 7 minutes from the break looked to be a gap-opener.

However Kilrea came back with a goal and a point from Mary Jo Brennan for the teams to go in even at the interval, 1-2 each.

An excellent individual goal from Sinead O’Rourke in the 46 th  minute was followed by a hand-passed one from Fiona Cunningham and that did open a gap that the Bann-siders could not close.

Kilkeel had opportunities to add to their total, but instead a point from Frances McMahon started a come-back that was followed by a goal from Daire McKenna.

However despite a lot of late pressure, Kilkeel managed to hold out and claim the Shield.
