2013 will count for nothing insists Baldwin

Derry manager Joe Baldwin believes that last year’s comfortable victory will account for nothing when Derry take on Down in the NWP Recycling Ulster Senior Championship Final on Sunday.

The Oak Leafers have found themselves undergoing a major transition with experienced players like Katrina O’Kane, Katie McAnenly, Aideen Mullan and Keelan Bradley all leaving the panel but Baldwin has been encouraged by the talent on show from some of the younger players throughout the National League campaign.

“Last year accounts for nothing it is about here and now, we have to go out and work hard to win. Throughout the National League we blooded new and young players and got them some important county experience.

“We have a number of really exciting players who have shown well, the likes of Megan Kerr have really stepped it up. She has been a standout player for us and is an emerging talent. There are lots of quality players in Derry and I am privileged to work with them and to watch them play every week.

“It is disappointing that we haven’t had any real game time since the National League, but we really stepped up the pace in training and got some much needed challenge games. On top of this the Derry League is hugely competitive so that will stand by the girls,” he said.

The Oak Leafers have found themselves playing much of the season without some of their star players. Grainne McGoldrick and Karen Kielt were injured for much of the National League, while Sinead Cassidy has also picked up an injury.

Despite the injury issues Baldwin is confident that his side can prevail on Sunday, saying:  “We do have some injury concerns heading into the game. Grainne (McGoldrick) and Sinead (Cassidy) both have injuries and will be a loss for us. Grainne would be a loss for any side in Ireland but we have some experienced players back with the squad so that has helped. I hope the strength and depth we have throughout the panel will show.

“We are in good shape heading into the Final and there will be no complacency from the girls, we know what Down are capable of, they are a good side. Down have had a great season so far and have some talented players who will be a tough challenge for us,” he added.
