Cavan hope to seize opportunity for silverware

Cavan have had a stuttering year but it could end with success in Sunday’s NWP Recycling Ulster Intermediate Championship Final against Tyrone in Pairc Esler.

Cavan were due to face Antrim in Breffni Park on Sunday past but following Antrim’s withdrawal they now will go straight into the Ulster Final. John Kearney has been installed as manager for Cavan and is hoping to use the opportunity this weekend to gain some silverware and allow him to prepare for 2015.

‘At the start of the year we were not going to field a team in 2014 and after a couple of attempts we now have a good group together. We have a proud tradition of Camogie in Cavan and through the jigs and the reels we now have an opportunity to participate in the Ulster Intermediate Championship and we are looking forward to Sunday’.

Cavan won the NWP Recycling Ulster Junior Championship in 2012 and 2013 and have many skilful players such as Rosie Crowe and Roisin O’Keefe who were named as Ulster Junior Players of the Year following those Championship successes. With players of the calibre of this Lacken duo Kearney has optimism ahead of the Newry clash.

‘We have some great players who are well experienced and have played to a high level and we are optimistic going into the game on Sunday but we are realistic enough to say that we haven’t had the preparation that Tyrone have had with a couple of tough games under their belt and we know we are up against it but we are hoping to gain a bit of momentum to develop the County team for the future’.

John overseen a successful campaign with Cavan minors starting back in November 2013 to prepare for this year. He’s already agreed to take both Seniors and Minors in 2014 and while looking forward to next year already he hopes his side can still win this week to instil confidence for the years ahead.

‘We are starting to focus on next year and we’ll be working with the County Board to ensure that the proper structures are put in place for 2015. At the same time you don’t get many opportunities of an Ulster Intermediate Final and we’ll be focusing on performing to the best of our ability on Sunday’.
