Clontibret retain NWP Recycling Bridie McMenamin Shield with solid performance

An Mhaigh GAC hosted two fantastic games on Sunday 19th October. In the first encounter in front of a big crowd reigning NWP Recycling Bridie McMenamin Shield Champions Clontibret took on a lively Laragh side who were full of confidence. With a strong wind blowing down the pitch it was whoever took their chances would win the game and playing with the wind Clontibret got off to a good start taking the opening two points with Laragh eventually getting their first score against a strong wind to make it 0-2 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. In the next 10 minutes it was Clontibret who did all the scoring with midfielder Michelle Morgan involved in everything going forward. With 10 minutes to go in the first half Clontibret led 0-5 to 0-1 but this wasn’t a true reflection of the game as even though they were playing against the wind Laragh were launching numerous attacks but couldn’t break down a resistant Clontibret full back line with some outstanding play from captain Aisling Greenan, cornerback Shauna McKeever and some outstanding saves from goalkeeper Karen Boyle.

But Laragh’s continuous attacks soon paid off when they managed to get a goal from distance to make the score Clontibret 0-5 Laragh 1-1. With only a few minutes to go until half time it looked as if Laragh were starting to get the upper hand and go in at the break only a point behind and coming out with the wind at their back but Clontibret thought otherwise and hit back with three unanswered points to be in the lead 0-8 to 1-1 at half-time.

Clontibret started the second half similar to the first by taking first blood but this time it was a goal to go 1-8 to 1-1 up and putting all the pressure on Laragh even though they had the wind advantage. Again Clontibret were in full flow and managed to get another score to leave 8 points between the teams and Laragh needed to fightback quickly before they were too far a drift, and that is exactly what they did, responding with a point, then a goal, a with their heads now back in the game they struck over another two points to leave the game at Clontibret 1-9 Laragh 2-4 with just under 10 minutes to go.

It looked like it was going to be a phenomenal fight back from Laragh but no one could doubt the reigning champions as they hit back with a point to have a three point advantage and it seemed that Laragh had ran out of energy a bit too early as Clontibret extended their lead with another two points to finish the game Clontibret 1-13 Laragh 2-4. As was said at the start it was down to whoever took their chances and with 14 scores Clontibret were deserved winners.
