St Clare Cup final : Cross & Passion, Ballycastle 4-8 St Patrick’s, Maghera 1-3

Cross & Passion, Ballycastle emphatically retained the St Clare camogie Cup in Ballymena yesterday afternoon, beating St Patrick’s, Maghera in the final. Unbeaten throughout the competition, they were firm favourites for the title and got off to a great start with a 1-2 burst from Ciara Laverty in the opening seven minutes. Bronagh Gallagher responded with a tenth minute goal, but it was to be Maghera’s only score of the opening half with Ciara Laverty claiming her second goal in the 17th minute on the way to a half-time advantage of 2-5 to 1-0 for Cross & Passion. Although Bronagh Gallagher pointed three times for Maghera during the second half, Ballycastle continued to dominate and Laverty completed her hat-trick in the 48th minute with Charley McCarry adding their fourth goal two minutes later. Although comfortably beaten, Maghera had good performances from Bronagh McCullough, Sinead McGill, Kate McEldowney and Olivia Laverty in defence and their only scorer Bronagh Gallagher . For Ballycastle there were many stars in a solid team performance with all their scorers and captain Maeve Kelly really looking the part.
