Lets start it NOW: Anti-Bullyiing Week 16th – 20th November
Anti-Bullying Week 16th-22nd November
Can I remind people that bullying behaviour is currently defined as “repeated use of power, by one or more persons, intentionally to harm, hurt or adversely affect the rights or needs of another or others”. (NI Anti-Bullying Forum).
It can take many forms, but the 3 main types are:
- physical (e.g. hitting, kicking, theft),
- verbal (e.g. racist, homophobic or sectarian remarks, threats, name-calling) and
- emotional (e.g. isolating an individual from the activities and social acceptance of his peer group).
This includes communication via social media that involves any members of your sport, therefore it is important that members are aware that they are breaching your code of conduct if they engage in bullying online. Just because the bullying behaviour does not physically occur in your club/sport setting does not excuse your sport from it responsibility to respond.
Let’s stop bullying now, yes Anti-Bullying week is 16th – 20th November but within your club everyday should be Anti-Bullying!!
What can we do to stop bullying? Below are a few thing for starters:
- ALL CLUBS SHOULD REGISTER VIA www.endbullying.org.uk to support the campaign locally in their own setting.
- Get anti- bullying posters up in your clubs/organisations directly.
- Encourage well known individuals within your sport/club to promote anti-bullying campaign by tweeting or photo opportunities during Anti-Bullying Week which this year runs from 16th-22nd November .
- Place information on your own web site or in e-newsletters/journals about bullying
- Publicise activities during anti-bullying week encouraging sports clubs to end bullying
